Alcudia

Alcudia is situated in the north-eastern part of Alcudia Bay in Majorca – the biggest of the Balearic Islands. The present name of the town is of Arabian descent. The Arabs, much the same as the Romans previously landed in the Bay, in the North of the island on the ruins of the town Pollenca. Here they founded a new settlement, which they called “Town on the Hill”.

Perfectly preserved middle age town walls offered protection against pirate assaults. The gates Porta de Sant Sebastia and Porta de Xara lead into the town centre. Within the town walls there is a number of houses of the town nobles. A wonderful town hall houses the municipal authority. Twice a week (Sunday and Tuesday) a market in front of the town walls is open. This has become a great tourist attraction.

Walking around Puerto Alcudia (some 2 kilometres away from Alcudia) one can feel the atmosphere of an old fishing port. A little and cosy marina, a “corso” lined with many restaurants and wonderful beaches, adds to the charm and holiday flair of Alcudia. Apart from watersports Alcudia and its environs offer a variety of active leisure time: tennis, golf, horse riding, paragliding, mountain biking and attractive hiking footpaths.
